How do you get around LA CA?

I am going on vacation to LA california this summer by plane, my hotel is in Burbank. I will not have a car, and don't really want to spend the extra cash in renting one. So how do you get around in LA? taxis? I heard they have subways and buses but also that they are not the safest way to commute. is that true? or do you think it would be worth it to just rent a car? thanks for the help!
