Biology help needed. Athletes often train at high altitudes in order to prepare for major competitions. Why?

The higher up in the atmosphere you go, the lower the concentration of oxygen. Red blood cells carry oxygen through out the bloodstream. The more of them there are, the easier it is for your blood to stay oxygenated. Once they get back down to low elevation, they're getting a lot more than their competition that didn't train in the mountains or wherever.
